What greater freedom could be granted than to know the only true God, to be in His presence, totally clean and pure? Oh, but who could possibly attain such a great claim?
I know too well my shortcomings, and I’ve heard myself speaking what I think must be a common phrase in middle age: the more I know, the more I see that I DON’T know. How many more shortcomings are hidden within that “not known?” It could be pretty discouraging, actually. Self-introspection can lead me down a road with no hope.
But there is ONE who has gone before me, who had no faults, was the only sinless One ever known, and thought about my freedom even as He prayed about His own path to the cross:
“Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent." John 17:1-3
Jesus has the only authority that has been granted to win true freedom, and He planned to use that authority on my behalf! What an incredible thought.
I have a dear elderly friend who has lived through devastation that I could never imagine. Invaded by Stalin’s Communist Russia, her homeland of the Ukraine was plundered and ruined. As if that wasn’t enough, then the Nazis ripped all the people of her village away from their homeland and forced them to relocate to a land where they were subject to incredible bondage. When the war was finally over, the way seemed blocked to be able to leave.
But this feisty young woman, pregnant with her first child, marched past the guards into the US Consulate’s office and declared her heart’s longing to live free in America. More than that, she wanted her baby to be born into a land where freedom was the creed. Amazingly, this officer moved aside the usual lengthy wait, granted her wish, and set her and her husband on a plane to the USA the very next day! And then this woman who could read no English, worked diligently and passed all of her tests to become a United States Citizen, more than half a century ago.
She knew that the person in charge, the US Consulate, was the one who held the authority to grant her true freedom. On her own, she held no authority to find freedom. And on my own I have no authority to find the true freedom that will bring me eternal life. But there is ONE who holds that authority--ONE who hears the cries of every heart, every soul longing for an eternal Home.
“To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy— to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore." Jude 1:24-25
Through the sacrifice paid by our Lord Jesus Christ, the way to real freedom is offered to each of us. And we don’t have to march past any guards! Jesus made the way open to the Father’s heart.
Why do I live as if I am still stuck under this bondage?
He is able to keep me from stumbling! And He has won my freedom. Eternally.
