I have struggled in my pondering of the word sufficient. I started out wondering if sufficient is really sufficient. It seems that if something is sufficient, it is just enough to get by and nothing extra, just meeting our needs and not our desires. I tend to desire at least a little more than what is sufficient in some areas of my life.
When Paul asked the Lord to take away the thorn in his flesh, the Lord responded, “My grace is sufficient, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Cor. 12:9 ESV) But is God’s grace sufficient enough?
I believe the answer is yes.
Each of us is different, with our own individual DNA, strengths, weaknesses, and personality. God has a plan for each of us, to accomplish His purpose for our life. That plan reminds me of a recipe for baking a cake. The recipe calls for the right ingredients in the right proportions, the right oven temperature and the right length of time in the oven.
If the recipe is not followed precisely, it may not turn out to be the delicious cake I had expected. God knows the exact ingredients, proportions, timing, and grace needed for each situation we face in life. We just need to trust in Him to accomplish His purpose for our life.
I think I finally see what the Lord wants me to know about sufficient. My thoughts have focused on the fact that I was not comfortable with the things in my life being just sufficient. Actually, I thought a lot of things were outright insufficient. In spite of my good intentions and efforts, the things I desire are not always best for me.
I came across a verse this morning in my devotional time, which gave me a better understanding of God’s sufficiency.
This God – His way is perfect, the word of the Lord proves true; He is a shield for all those who take refuge in Him. Psalm 18:30
So His grace is perfectly sufficient!
